Cleaning a Dog Sprayed By a Skunk
If your dog has been sprayed by a skunk, it is important to act quickly, especially if the spray hit their face or eyes.
Immediate Steps:
- Keep them outside: Prevent the oils from spreading into your home.
- Check their eyes: If there is redness, squinting, or excessive tearing, flush the eyes gently with lukewarm water or a sterile saline solution.
- The "Magic" Solution: Mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Use this to wash the dog's fur immediately after the incident.
Warning: Do not let the mixture get into the dog's eyes. If your dog shows signs of severe eye irritation or pain, contact a veterinarian immediately, as skunk spray can cause temporary blindness or ocular inflammation.
